ღ Sohma Curse: Curse » { Spirit Curse }

» { OVERVIEW } The Sohma Curse (草摩の呪い, Sōma no Noroi) is a "bond" between God and thirteen members of the Zodiac. Akito Sohma is the "God" of the Zodiac, while various members of the Sohma family are possessed by the spirits of the animals from the Chinese Zodiac, including the Cat.

» { TRANSFORMATION } The Zodiacs transform into their respective animals if they are hugged by a person of the opposite sex (excluding another Zodiac), or if they are under a great deal of stress (such as exhaustion, sickness, or lack of breath). The 2001 anime shows the curse to be much more sensitive than in the manga, as simply bumping into a cursed Sohma causes them to transform. Whenever the Zodiacs transform into their respective animals and turn back to their human form, they are naked and colored clouds surround their bodies. Their clothes remain where they were left when they initially transformed. Being possessed by the Cat's spirit, Kyo transforms into an orange cat and his cloud is orange.

» { INTIMACY } It's possible for the cursed members of the Zodiac to have children with non-cursed humans. However, sexual intercourse is tricky because of the curse, thus potentially causing the spouse to grow frustrated with the lack of intimacy. While same-sex couples don't occur in the Fruits Basket canon, it's assumed that same-sex coupling between Zodiacs and non-cursed humans is much easier.

» { ANIMAL ATTRACTION } The Zodiacs can attract animals of their possessed Zodiac animal and can somewhat communicate with them, which can be used for assistance. Kyo, bearing the spirit of the Cat, is able to do this with cats, though he often finds the ability annoying. The most likely reason within the recent century for keeping the Zodiac secret is that the cursed Sohmas could be exploited if the government ever found out; the cursed ones can command and understand the animals of their zodiac form. (Cats, rabbits, birds, and seahorses aside, the rest could prove dangerous for many things.)

» { ANIMAL CHARACTERISTICS } The Zodiacs have distinct characteristics and often share special traits with the animal they are possessed by. Being cursed by the spirit of the Cat, Kyo has orange hair and eyes, which is a genetic trait and can be passed down to his children. His eyes become silt-like and his canines elongate when the Cat spirit stirs in him, often when he gets angry, surprised, or emotionally agitated. He also shares some traits which mirror the Cat's traditional personality characteristics in the Zodiac Legend. Kyo is often seen sitting on a roof or standing on walls because like a cat, he is drawn to high places. He's been known to take naps in trees and can sleep in positions that might seem uncomfortable to others. Kyo likes to hide behind walls when he wishes to talk to someone urgently, and he gets frightened by loud noises, becoming startled like a cat. He dislikes water, hence hating to swim or go to a beach, though seems to be more at ease with showers, baths, and hot springs. Due to this, Kyo's mood changes drastically during rain, becoming restless, tired, moody, and more than easily agitated, but at the same time having no strength to argue or fight. He prefers to wear a loose-fitting t-shirt or jacket because he doesn't like tight clothing (especially around the neck, since cats hate collars). Kyo has been shown eating fish and drinking milk quite often as well.

» { ANIMAL ABILITIES } The Zodiacs share special abilities that normal humans lack. Being the Cat, Kyo can smoothly land on his feet without injury, even from high places. This is seen when he jumped out of his school window from the second floor without any injuries. He also possesses an unnatural degree of flexibility, akin to a cat, and has cat-like reflexes, which further augment his strength being developed by martial arts.

» { "TRUE FORM" } Unlike the other Zodiacs, the Cat is the only of the Cursed Zodiacs to have a "true form", a grotesque, foul-smelling, orange-colored monster with orange eyes (dark green with purple eyes in 2001 anime ) and sharp claws and teeth. In this form, Kyo gains superhuman agility, speed, and strength, enough to cause a stone cliff to collapse from a single punch. Kyo has to wear his Juzu bead bracelet at all times, which was made from human blood and bones, in order to not transform into his "true form" whenever it's removed.

» { CONNECTION } The thirteen members of the Zodiac are in one way connected to one another, and share an extremely powerful and strong blood bond with their God, being physically and emotionally unable to openly defy them even when they do want and try to do so. Only a few words of rejection from their God's mouth can emotionally and physically wound the Zodiacs. However, it is shown that the Zodiacs are able to defy their God if their will is strong enough, or if they form a stronger bond with someone else than with their God.

» { FAMILY } Since the Sohma family is shown to have many different businesses under their control, it's not too far fetched to believe that they have considerable pull and influence within the government to help cover up the curse whenever they have to erase memories and move the exposed Sohma to new schools (since the constant school changes would raise a ton of red flags that something was off).

ღ MARTIAL ARTIST: Combat » { Expert }

» { NOTES } Kyo is a skilled martial artist, having been training in the combat practice from a young age by his adoptive father, Kazuma. Kazuma did this to teach him discipline and to help Kyo become stronger in his life, knowing it will be so difficult being cursed by the Cat. It was also the first time Kyo finally found something he was passionate about. Kyo's martial arts combines elements of Karate, Judo, and other art forms. Because of his training, Kyo possesses enhanced strength for someone his age, able to easily shatter a thick coffee table in half with a punch and crash through the second-story floor/ceiling of a traditional Japanese house with kicks. This strength, combined with his unnatural degree of flexibility and cat-like reflexes, makes him a formidable opponent.

» { NOTES } Kyo is naturally good at cooking. Because Kazuma is so appallingly bad at cooking, Kyo initially became good at it to survive. He also has a knack for forming onigiri and is best at simple, traditional Japanese meals. Kyo is not very picky about food, but he absolutely hates leeks, green onions, and miso (resorting to a gas mask if he's forced to cook with them). He hates the smell of leeks and the taste of onions, and while he can tolerate miso soup, he can't stand miso dengaku. Kyo also dislikes Chinese chives. While he's too young to officially drink, it's noted that his alcohol tolerance is pretty weak.
